Have just got back from another test flight with the plugs swapped over and found no apparent difference in the performance. The rpm still wandered 500rpm at cruise which is really annoying, and mag drop never improved. So it looks like its most likely a fuel problem as suggested earlier by Roger or Bill (i think).

This time I shut down the engine by turning off the fuel supply and idling for 2 minutes before switching off. Tomorrow I will see if it improves starting. This coming weekend I will also clean out the fuel lines and check filters. Think there is three of them. I don't really want to start stripping down the carbs as it looks all a bit technical for me, so if things don't improve soon I will do as Dennis suggested...pay a L2 aviation mechanic to service it. Might be $500 well spent.

Thanks for all input on this

It still sounds like a fuel delivery issue.

I would agree if your not to confident working on carbs or the cabling that goes with the get sombody who know what they are doing,

Fuel delivery is also important with a 2 stroke as it also cools the piston....any lack of it at a critical time can lead to seizures,

When the throttles are completely closed there should be some free play on the throttle cables where they go into the top of the carbs,

I think you said it had not run for a few years.....it thats the case....if it where mine I would strip the carbs and check for varnish or gum that can form and partially block jets...again a danger with a 2 stroke.

    I agre with Nick,

If these sat for a long time and never were drained then I would pull them apart and clean them. Using a carb cleaner in the fuel will not work. Any type fuel pump you may have needs to be checked for proper operation too.

Bill...you were right. The bulk of my problems were caused by a poor wire connection onto the Plug cap on #2 plug. I cut it as you saID AND SCREWED IT BACK ON, AND THE ENGINE IS NOT ONLY STARTing good, but the hunting has all but stopped now. The mag drop that was 600rpm before, has now reduced to 400rpm. Some continuity checks I did also revealed something amiss in the low mag... maybe a stator plate. I got a guy coming to strip it down and find the problem in 3 weeks time. I will keep you updated. Thanks for your help everyone.
