There do seem to be increasing numbers of owners discovering that their ignition modules do not start the engine. It is a very simple amplifier circuit with very simple ignition advance control. There is no technical reason why this couldn't be replaced with an alternative ignition amplifier so long as it can set the correct advance for starting and for running. In theory it would be possible to carry out a fault tree analysis to make sure that the new amps did not increase the safety risk compared to the existing ones. If they require a battery power source then this would have to be factored into the risk calculations.

I would be interested to see details of your proposal Paval, it would be good to see if there was a viable alternative.

From what I understand, Rotax are now offering a pair of new design ignition modules for the price of one of the old ones. They also include the soft start function for the 912S. The only downside is that they have the 6 pin plug and sockets fitted. You could make an adapter loom using the connectors available from:

    https://www.corsa-technic.com

    The parts you need are:

    B4APT
    B4AS
    B6AP
    B6AS

The bullet connectors are more widely available.

This may be the most cost effective way forward for most owners without having to convince your governing body that it is safe to use completely different ignition modules.

As a final thought, what about using one new amp (that will start the engine) and one standard faulty module that will operate normally when the engine is running. This would give you diverse ignition modules and may actually increase safety.

I would be interested to see more details on your modules.

Rotax made a special deal on a pair of modules when they introduced the soft start feature. It was an incentive to get people to upgrade. The Rotax Modules retail at about £420+Vat/pair. Your pricing is going to need to be really good if you want to encourage owners to use non genuine parts, but it sounds like you have a good alternative.

I am glad that someone cares about my solution
"my" module eliminates the potential problems of defective or weak internal independent power source. It is a microprocessor controlled and through RS232 communication You can set any ignition timing map. No problem to fit with 4pin or 6pin connector option of course. I also considered using one of the original module, together with the "my" one. You only need to set the same ignition map. Actually I do not know what else to say, happy to answer any further questions ..
