No Rob the back up switch is off. Only start power momentary switch is deployed as the starter button depressed. I have the standard Rotax switching arrangement
By the way, I have labelled this switch as 'direct battery power' which I reckon is the best description.

There is always the possibility that a Generator has actually failed.

Was your engine involved in the Mandatory Service bulletin from 2 years ago requiring the replacement of the Generator Stator?

The Generator Cables coming from the Engine should measure less than 0.5 ohms between the three wires at each of the Black and Grey connectors.
A resistance so low that most meters will measure it as a short between the wires.
If you measure an Open, or any number much greater than what you get when you just touch the meter leads together, you have a problem.

Hi Bill, here is some data which may be useful although I'm not qualified to determine!

Static engine with the 3 pin connectors off the regulators A&B uncoupled:
    Using arbitrary pin numbering

    Black connector A
    Resistance across coils.
    Poles 1 - 2 : 0.9ohm Poles 1 - 3 : 0.9ohm Poles 2 - 3 : 0.9ohm
All poles have open circuit to engine block

    Grey connector B
    Resistance across coils.
    Poles 1 - 2 : 0.7 ohm, Poles 1 - 3 : 0.7 ohm, Poles 2 - 3 : 0.7 ohm
All poles have open circuit to engine block

Engine running with the connectors uncoupled:
    ac voltage
    Black connector A
    @ 1800 rpm Poles 1 - 2 : 31.2volts, Poles 1 - 3 : 31.9volts, Poles 2 - 3 : 31.9volts.
    @ 3000 rpm Poles 1 - 2 : 50.7volts, Poles 1 - 3 : 50.5volts, Poles 2 - 3 : 50.0volts.

    Grey connector B
    @ 1800 rpm Poles 1 - 2 : 29.3volts, Poles 1 - 3 : 28.6volts, Poles 2 - 3 : 28.7volts.
    @ 3000 rpm Poles 1 - 2 : 45.0volts, Poles 1 - 3 : 44.6volts, Poles 2 - 3 : 45.4volts.

    With connectors coupled
Looking down on the fuse box terminal posts, receiving the regulator/rectifier cables numbering from left to right 1-6, A on the left and B on the right.
    Engine running circa 2000rpm
    direct voltage
    Between 1&3 14.3volts
    Between 2&3 14.3volts
    Between 4&6 14.05volts
    Between 4&5 2.9 volts

Apologies Bill for my incomplete response, yes the factory recall stators replacement was carried out.

I was told you should check the K1 relay in the fusebox, as it switches between the generators.
Take the lid off and see if the left hand relay is loose (as viewed with the X1, X2, X3 connectors towards you)
