I like the idea of clear plastic filters for inspection.
But I have hesitations about them when the subject of fires come up.
It kind of defeats the purpose of going through the exercise of covering all the fuel hoses with Silicon Fire Sleeving.
In a fire, the plastic filter is going to melt in about 30 seconds and start pouring fuel to feed the flames.

If you are filling the fuel tanks from portable cans, it behooves you maintain their cleanliness.
If the outside of the gas can is covered in debris, you risk it falling into the fuel tank while pouring.

I like to use a "Mr.Funnel Fuel Filter" Funnel when hand transferring fuel.
It separates out any water and filters to the 100-200 micron range.
Whatever gets past it will be too small to see.
It gives the system filters a chance to do their jobs with the Microscopics Particles and not have to deal with sawdust and other Macro Debris.

Bill, I definitely share your view. However, who says that any filter has to live underneath the cowling. My beloved clear view plastic filters are placed behind the fire wall. If I can stand the temperature there the filter can, too. Should fire occur on my side of the fire wall there would be trouble greater than the temperature capabilities of the plastic, I guess.
Having said that, it does spring to my mind if it is a good idea to place a relatively large container with fuel in a hot environment. I can imagine that the fuel reservoir of a let's say aluminum filter allows the fuel to heat up more than if was just shooting through the hoses with no place to slow down and heat up.
During flight that should not be a problem but once you switch off the engine to go for a cup of something the heating up becomes severe. I guess it can influence the restart capabilities. It actually did in our case.
Well, we changed all fuel hosing and the position of filters and the electric fuel pump because restarting the engine after a short while was a pain in the neck for temperature. Ever since it simple fires off. No probes no more.
